Funding from the state budget for the project of the Center for Evaluation of Technology Transfer ISCTE (CVTT), an institution that now has former Finance Minister Joao Liao as vice president of the university, has stimulated right-wing parties with parliamentary seats – PSD, Iniciativa Liberal e Chega – asking this Wednesday to hear Liao, as well as the Minister Current Finance Minister Fernando Medina, former Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education Manuel Heitor and Dean of ISCTE and former Socialist Minister Maria de Lourdes Rodriguez.

During the parliamentary debate on the stabilization programme, Medina confirmed that “all clarifications will be provided” on the issue of ISCTE financing. The minister added that he “supported” his predecessor’s statements.

Hours ago, João Leão confirmed, in a statement, that “in regards to universities, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) has submitted only one project, the ISCTE Project, for funding within the scope of this allocation.”

The subject of the controversy is a news item from Público, which cited former Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, reports that MCTES has directed more than one project for funding.

According to Público, only ISCTE’s request for funding was approved by the Ministry of Finance, then led by João Leão.

Joao Liao insisted that he “in his capacity as Finance Minister” “did not interfere with this funding decision”.
