Addressing the President of Ukraine, Augusto Santos Silva, President of the National Assembly of the Republic, said: “Your country’s struggle for freedom is the struggle of the whole of Europe for freedom.” Volodymyr Zelensky spoke Thursday in front of the Portuguese Parliament, in a formal session attended by dignitaries of the Portuguese state.
“Portugal has not failed in this struggle for democratic freedom,” added the President of the Council of the Republic about 15 minutes after Zelensky’s intervention.
Augusto Santos Silva stressed that for Portugal it is clear that “the aggressor is Russia and whoever attacked Ukraine,” noting that the latter had the right to “defend itself.” “It is a great honor for the Portuguese Parliament to officially welcome him and to have his words heard. The participation of the President and Prime Minister of Portugal in this solemn session demonstrates well the national unity around support for Ukraine, a support that brings together the bodies of the people who did not attend, said Santos Silva, at a session not attended by MPs, Sovereignty is shared by the political parties in the government and the opposition.
Portugal’s “respect for international law” is imperative, Santos Silva stressed, in addition to being “binding to the UN Charter, values peace, security and love of freedom.” In this way, Portugal is “without hesitation or ambiguity, for Ukraine, on whose territory the struggle for freedom, independence and peace in Europe is currently taking place.”
In this video intervention, the Ukrainian president thanked on several occasions the support of the Portuguese, and also urged Portugal to “help Ukraine, by accelerating sanctions as well as arms”. Zelensky stressed that the country needed “heavy weapons” to be able to defend itself from this Russian attack.
