Eaton is supplying B Reaktor® circuit protection technology to leading European vehicle manufacturers for new models of electric vehicles

SOUTHFIELD, MI, April 21, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Power management company Eaton announced today that its eMobility business has been awarded a contract to supply its circuit protection technology, B Reaktor® to a European vehicle manufacturer for use in several models of 800-volt battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

B Reaktor technology is a new advanced circuit protection solution for BEVs that combines the functionality of fuses, pyrotechnic switches and contactors into a single coordinated device. As EV power levels rise, Break’s circuit protection solution solves the ever-growing challenge of coordinating between fuses and contactors while providing fast, safe and reliable protection for battery and inverter systems.

“To meet consumer demand for electric vehicles (EVs) with longer range and faster charging, newer EVs have higher power levels, increasing the need for advanced circuit protection for these high-speed systems,” said Scott Adams, President of eMobility at Eton. “Our reactor technology offers improved safety and reliability of EV systems with a simplified architecture. In fact, one Breactor circuit protection unit can replace up to 15 components. We are excited to bring such an important part of the EV system to this maker of world class vehicles.

BREAKHOR’s circuit protection technology is an innovative solution that leverages Eaton’s industrial electronics and automotive expertise to deliver performance and reliability while simplifying the architecture. Activated in less than 4 milliseconds on short circuit faults up to 900 volts and 25,000 amps, Break’s circuit protection technology improves vehicle safety and protects components from any overcurrent magnitude more effectively than traditional protection methods. The circuit protection solution from B Reaktor can be reset like a circuit breaker, allowing the device to be reactivated after a functional test, reducing costs for both the OEM and the consumer.

“In the event of a collision, Eaton’s BREAKER circuit protection technology works in tandem with the vehicle’s safety systems,” Adams said. “Quickly disconnects the high-voltage battery from the rest of the vehicle for protection and safety in unsafe conditions.”

Break’s circuit protection technology offers BEV manufacturers several additional benefits, including:

  • An automatic tripping device that can detect a current spike and break the circuit without the need for external detection or tripping.

  • A short circuit current limiting device that improves system level protection.

  • It works regardless of the current direction and allows both charging and operation under full load conditions.

  • Availability in multiple configurations including voltage levels and multi-pin designs.

BREAKTOR’s circuit protection solution was developed and tested at Eaton’s advanced electrical manufacturing facility in Bonn, Germany, with partial production scheduled to begin this year in Gummersbach, Germany, and final assembly in Győr, Hungary.
